Tip #4: Water Heater Maintenance

One time during the year drain off 5 gallons of water from your water heater. This will help remove some of the sediment build up from the bottom of your water heater thus decreasing corrosion and increasing the life and efficiency of the water heater. Call us if you have problems.

Tip #5: Sink and Shower Smells

The smell in your sink, shower or other smelly pipes in your home is caused by bacteria that breeds and multiplies in the film coating of the drain pipe or tailpipe between the fixture trap and the actual drain outlet in the fixture. This junk in your pipes can cause an unmistakable gurgling or suction noise as well.

The reason you smell the odor when you first use a fixture after a while of non-use, is because when the running water hits the nasty film, it releases some of the bacteria into the air. To lessen the bad smells in your sink and shower, remove the drain strainer and you will see a layer of the slimy matter coating the inside of the trap and heading down the pipe. Clean off as much of this matter as possible. Use clothes and ware a protective mask. Do the same to the sink. You may have to remove the sink stopper to access the tailpipe. Or, you could just give us a call, if you don't wish to get all nasty, smelly and gooey.

The overflow tube that leads from the top of the sink to the tailpiece can also contribute to the problem. Get a plumber to come assist you with your problem. Call Just Drains (617-265-2828) today and receive an instant $20 discount by mentioning code "Drains 27" at the time of calling.
